Instagram now lets you edit DMs up to 15 minutes after sending them

Instagram announced today that it is rolling out a feature for users to edit their direct messages up to 15 minutes after sending. The company also announced that users will soon get the option to pin up to three messaging threads to the top of their inbox.

The ability to edit your DMs lets you fix typos or change things if your message doesn't seem quite right. To edit a message, you need to press and hold it, and then select “Edit” from the dropdown menu. Once you edit a message, there will be an “Edited” label at the top of the purple text bubble notifying the other person that the message has been changed. The feature works similarly to Apple's Edit feature for iMessage, which launched nearly two years ago.

As for the option to pin a chat to the top of your inbox, you'll be able to do so by swiping left or tapping and holding a chat, then tapping “Pin.” You can choose to unpin a thread at any time. This feature can be used to quickly access chats you visit frequently, but it can also be used as a way to remind yourself to come back to a specific conversation later.

Instagram also recently started allowing all users to turn off read receipts for all of their chats or specific chats. You can turn off read receipts for all chats by going to your account settings, tapping on “Replies to messages and stories,” and then clicking the “Show read receipts” button and then toggling them off. The company first started testing this feature in November.

The company shared that users can now save their favorite stickers in DMs for easy access by pressing on the sticker they want to save. After saving a sticker, you can find it at the top the next time you visit a sticker.

By providing a better messaging experience, Instagram likely wants to motivate its users to message their friends and family through its platform rather than its competitors' messaging services.
