Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, the first major expansion for the acclaimed action RPG, received a gameplay trailer, detailing a new story, characters and a new map, and a release date. The DLC will launch on June 21st on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X, with pre-orders for the game now live on all platforms. Shadow of the Erdtree, which will focus on the story of Malenia's brother Mikaela, is FromSoftware's largest expansion to date and players will be tasked with uncovering a new mystery.

The DLC will take place in the Land of Shadows, a new region that will take players beyond the Lands Between. “Land of Shadows.” Obscure spot by Erdtree.
Where Goddess Marika first stepped. A land purified in a nameless battle.
Burned by Mesmer's flame. Mikaela had gone to this land. Separating yourself from your body, your strength, your lineage. Of all things golden. And now Mikaela awaits the return of his promised Lord,” reads the description from FromSoftware.

The three-minute long gameplay trailer, though as cryptic as ever, showed off plenty of new enemies, bosses, and a new setting, giving fans ample fodder to come up with theories about the central mystery. The trailer begins with Mikaela's withered hand hanging from her cocoon. “Come now. Touch the withered hand, and journey to the Shadow Realm,” the trailer later says, suggesting that the new lands of the Shadow Realm will be accessible by touching or holding Mikaela's arm.

The trailer also introduces a new villain, Mesmer the Impaler, who appears to be the final boss of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. Mesmer rules over the land of Shadow, which has been ravaged by his flame. FromSoftware hasn't revealed any details about the new character, but it won't take long for fans to take apart the trailer and find all the hidden clues.

Shadow of the Aerdtree will feature a huge new story, taking players on a new adventure through the Land of Shadows. The DLC's story description reads, “Guided by Empyrean Mikaela, players are transported to the Land of Shadows, a place obscured by the Erdtree where the goddess Marika first stepped foot.” “In these strange new lands, players discover the dark secrets of the world as they meet others who follow in Mikaela's footsteps with ulterior motives.”

The Land of Shadows is an entirely new world within the Elden Ring, separate from the main game called The Lands Between. While the size of the new map is yet unknown, FromSoftware says the “huge” new area will allow players to seamlessly travel back and forth between different sections. Like the Lands Between, the new map will be diverse, with players facing new secrets, enemies, situations, and dangerous dungeons.

In addition to new lore, enemies, and bosses, the expansion will bring new weapons, equipment, weapon skills, and magic not previously seen in Elden Ring, with FromSoftware promising a deeper RPG experience.

The Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will be available separately in a standard edition and a premium bundle that includes a digital artbook and the original soundtrack. The expansion will also be available as part of a bundle with the base game. And finally, there is a Collector's Edition, available in limited quantities, which includes the expansion, a 46 cm statue of “Mesmer the Impaler”, an art book, and a download voucher for the original soundtrack.

Shadow of the Erdtree is currently available for pre-order on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox storefronts, with a release scheduled for June 21st. Keep in mind that the expansion will require the base game to play.
