Box Office 2023: Punjabi Movies Collected Rs. 235 crores, Marathi films grossed Rs. 201 crores, Bengali films collected Rs. 66 crore in 2023Box Office 2023: Punjabi Movies Collected Rs. 235 crores, Marathi films grossed Rs. 201 crores, Bengali films collected Rs. 66 crore in 2023

Punjabi films had a historic 2019 as collections surged to Rs. 249 crore, the highest figure ever achieved. In 2020, the figure was just Rs. 19 crore while it was Rs. 91 crores in 2021. 2022 was a bit disappointing as the total collections were Rs. 147 crores.

The 2023 figures were the second best ever as they jumped to Rs. 235 crores. It is lower than the 2019 figures, but there are signs of improvement. Footfalls also grew from 1.5 crore in 2022 to 2.3 crore in 2023, almost on par with 2017 levels (2.3 crore). The biggest hit of the year, Continue Jatta 3, was also the biggest Punjabi hit of all time, grossing Rs. 54 crores gross. This was followed by Mastaney (Rs. 33 crore) and Kali Jotta (21 crores).

Meanwhile, the Marathi box office performance was disappointing. It reached a record of Rs. 268 crore in 2022. But the figure came down to Rs. 201 crore in 2023. Footfalls also reduced from 2.60 crore in 2022 to 2 crore in 2023.

2023 saw Marathi cinema up and running Baipan Bhari Deva, which exceeded all expectations. Backed by Jio Studios, this woman-centric film grossed Rs. 92 crores gross in theatres. It is also the second highest grossing Marathi of all time. Unfortunately, this was the only big box office hit of the year. The second largest gross, subhedar, raised Rs. 18 cores. Jhimma 2 raised as much as the first part: Rs. 14 crores. She suffered mixed word of mouth and if reports were encouraging, she had the potential to cross Rs. 20 crore mark. The unfortunate thing is that a film like Vaalvi garnered widespread praise and yet did not even cross Rs. 10 crore mark.

The Bengali industry also saw a drop in collections, from Rs. 77 crores in 2022 to Rs. 66 crores in 2023. While the footfalls were 70 lakhs in 2022, they were 60 lakhs a year later. ChengizThe Eid release, which was also the first Bengali film to be released in Hindi, was the biggest hit of 2023, followed by Raktabeej and Dawshom Awbotaar.
