Alpha Beta Gamma: Srikumar Shankar's film to be released in theaters after receiving applause at the Cannes Film Festival

New Delhi: Srikumar Shankar's debut film “Alpha Beta Gamma” is now releasing in theatres, after creating a stir at the Cannes Film Festival.

Imagine the situation where a man is forced to spend 14 days confined in an apartment with his ex-wife and her current boyfriend, during the first COVID lockdown. That's the kind of pressure cooker atmosphere this love story addresses; “Alpha Beta Gamma” opens in theaters nationwide on March 8, 2024.

This commendable effort by the alumni of FTII, Pune, addresses a refreshingly new, yet universally relatable topic. No wonder the film has won national and international acclaim over the past three years.

Writer-director Srikumar Shankar's film premiered at the 52nd International Film Festival of India in Goa in November 2022. “Alpha Beta Gamma” was an official selection for the Panorama Section of the festival and was welcomed by audiences this sweet, salty and fascinating relationship drama. The film subsequently garnered attention at several film festivals on the international circuit, including Amerta Istanbul, La Berlinale and Cannes.

Writer-director Srikumar Shankar says, “We have a fantastic team; we are all friends and we have tried to create a new, slightly different take on a timeless theme – love, longing and jealousy. We are flattered and humbled by the love.” and warmth that the film has received from audiences around the world.

In 2022, the I&B Ministry has sent “Alpha Beta Gamma” to represent India in the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival. Later in 2022, the film was also screened at the 75th Cannes Film Festival. “Alpha Beta Gamma” was the only Hindi film of the six Indian films that were officially screened at Cannes under the auspices of the Government of India. The film had an enthusiastic reception at Cannes.

“Alpha Beta Gamma” also won hearts at the TASVEER Film Festival organized in Washington DC, United States. “Tasveer” is the largest film festival of South Asian films in North America, and “Alpha Beta Gamma” was an official entry to this event.

In 2023, the film's female lead, Reena Aggarwal, won the Best Actor trophy at the Reactor Film Festival in Austria (also as an official entry). 40 films from all over the world were screened at this festival and “Alpha Beta Gamma” was a great success.

Film producer duo Mona Shankar and Menka Sharma had this to say: “All of us FTII alumni put a lot of effort into this film. Just as festival audiences around the world have appreciated the film, I hope that” Our audience will also bless this offer of ours. The film's performance in the international circuit has boosted our confidence.”

“Alpha Beta Gamma” has a new take on an immensely relatable theme, where a school crush turns into love and then marriage. Ten years later, the couple grow apart and decide to go their separate ways, but they have not yet divorced. Both partners are already in new relationships, when Chiranjeev (male protagonist) visits her ex-wife at her request, only to meet her new boyfriend at her (formerly his) apartment. But, before he can back out, the COVID lockdown hits and the three of them are locked in that apartment for a minimum of 14 days.

That's when these seemingly mature adults start behaving like irrational children and sparks fly. This is a slice-of-life movie with a touch of comedy. The film stars Reena Aggarwal, Nishan Naniah and Amit Kumar Vasisht in the lead roles.

Produced under the banner of 'Chotee Film Productions' and 'Knownsense Entertainment', 'Alpha Beta Gamma' is presented by 70mm Talkies, Samant Chauhan and Agastya Jain. Mona Shankar, Menka Sharma, Jithin Raj and Thomas Punnoose have produced the film.
